Anna Brandt - nekrolog
Anna Christine Brandt Jensen was born February 22, 1897, at Sutton,
Nebraska. She was the second of six children of Mathias C. Brandt and
Anna Christine Rasmussen Brandt. The children's names were Hans, Anna,
William, Thyra, Harry and Mabel. When Anna was around 5 years old, the
family moved to Kenmare, North Dakota, where Anna received her eight
years of formal education.
After ten years, the family moved back
to Nebraska. They lived temporarily with the John Brandt family in
Fremont, Nebraska, until they could establish a new home near Ruskin,
where Anna lived until she married. Anna was confirmed in the Lutheran
faith on March 5, 1911.
On April 4, 1917, Anna married Andrew
Jensen of Superior, Nebraska. They settled on a farm near Superior,
where their two children were born, a son, Vern, and a daughter, Gladys.
It
was on this farm in the spring of 1926 that Andrew was critically
injured in a farm accident, from which he died one week later. At this
terrible time in her life, Anna did as she had always done (and would
always do), she turned to her Lord for help and strength. She worked
her farm and raised her children all by herself. It is a testament to
the courage, dignity, and strength of Anna that she successfully
operated her farm for the next ten years and saw to it that her children
were educated.
It was only after the long, hard, and dry years
of the depression that Anna moved to California with Gladys, later
joined by Vern, to begin anew. As she had always done, Anna worked to
support herself and her family. One of her most interesting jobs was a
three year stint as a housekeeper where she became acquainted with the
actor Ralph Bellamy, who thought very highly of her. Later, Anna worked
for many years as a seamstress in a garment factory until she retired
at the age of 70.
Anna always kept herself busy with church,
friends, and family. She loved to work in her garden, and her garden
was a thing of beauty. Her door and her heart were always open to all
who knocked, yet she remained an intensely private person. However if
you were her friend, her loyalty knew no bounds.
On March 4,
1989, Anna became very ill with congestive heart failure. On Sunday
morning, March 5, 1989, at the age of 92 years and 15 days, and exactly
78 years to the day after her confirmation, Anna Christine Brandt Jensen
went to be with her Lord.
Anna taught her children, her
grandchildren, and her great grandchildren to meet the trials of life
with dignity and courage and faith in God. She didn't just take about
her faith in God...she lived it; and she taught others by her example.
To
those who loved her, she will be sorely missed. But we thank God that
He let us have her for 92 years; and we take comfort in the knowledge
that she is happy to be with her Lord.
Funeral services were held
Sunday, March 12, 1989, at 2:00 p.m. from the Bethany Lutheran Church
in Ruskin, Nebraska, with Pastor John Plowman officiating. Music was
provided by Hartley Petersen, soloist, singing "The Old Rugged Cross"
with congregational hymns of "In The Garden" and "Abide With Me" with
Hildegarde Hansen as organist and accompanist. Casketbearers were
George Jensen, Donald Brandt, Lester Brandt, Dewane Houtwed, Edward
Schoof and Leslie Brandt. Burial was in the Spring Creek Cemetery near
Ruskin. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Nebraska, was in charge
of the arrangements.
